Weekly Market Watch - Interest Rates Falling

by Jeff Halbert, First Home Mortgage

Libyan unrest continues to support the treasury market today, with treasuries and mortgages opening slightly better than Friday’s close.  This week’s financial calendar is full of economic news.  Some of the more important releases include Personal Income and Spending this morning, which came in mixed and ISM Manufacturing on Tuesday.  The critical February Unemployment Report will be out on Friday.  Look for the federal government budget battle to be in the forefront this week as well, as a failure to come to a resolution could shut down the government, although most reports would seem to indicate a brief government shutdown would have little impact on mortgage lending.

Rate Trend: Slightly Lower! Laughing

Mortgage Rate Report

by Jeff Halbert, Senior Loan Officer, First Home Mort

It would be an understatement to say that this is a big week for financial markets.  The highly anticipated mid-term elections are on Tuesday.  Anything other than the expected sweep by Republicans could rattle markets.  The Federal Open Market Committee meets on Tuesday and Wednesday with a statement to be released on Wednesday at 2:15 pm.  The Fed will likely introduce a second round of quantitative easing which most market participants expect will be in the form of a $500 billion package of Treasury purchases over the next 6 months.  Lastly, we have the always important Unemployment Report for October on Friday.

RATE TREND: Steady.

CAUTION: Possible interest rate volatility later this week.

Weekly Market Update

by Jeff Halbert, First Home Mortgage

Treasury yields and mortgage rates are lower once again today as equities suffer.  Despite efforts to contain the financial crisis in Europe, the situation seems to be deteriorating.  The minutes released this week from the last Fed meeting indicated that it will be some time before the Fed starts to sell its MBS portfolio.  Additionally, the minutes indicated the financial developments overseas had a big influence on maintaining the current policy.  Throughout the minutes, it was evident that the Fed will be on hold indefinitely as any increase in interest rates could intensify the European problems and create a spillover effect on the U.S. economy.
